From Our Team — Why Escea Suits the Gold Coast
The Gold Coast throws three completely different design briefs at a fireplace — high-rise apartments and Broadwater canal homes where architecture is minimalist and every square metre counts, contemporary new builds at Mermaid, Palm Beach and Kingscliff where floor-to-ceiling glass and polished concrete are the language, and hinterland retreats at Tamborine, Springbrook and Currumbin Valley where the winter nights genuinely bite. Most fireplace brands do one of these well. Escea’s Powered Direct Vent technology — a fan-assisted flue that can travel up, sideways, down or under the floor — is what makes it the fireplace that solves all three.
For apartments and canal homes, that flue flexibility is the difference between “yes” and “not possible.” Escea fires can be built into kitchen islands, under windows, in freestanding walls or as double-sided room dividers between living and dining zones — installs most gas fires simply can’t reach. Every fire is room-sealed and glass-fronted, so combustion air and interior air never mix — no draughts, no fumes, no compromise to the airtight modern build. And for coastal properties, sealed combustion means no salt-laden coastal air drawn through the firebox to shorten the appliance’s life.
For hinterland homes, the DS Series and DF Series push out serious heat — up to 8kW+ on the larger DS models — enough to warm the open living spaces of a Tamborine, Springbrook or Beechmont home through the coldest winter nights. Smart Heat app control lets you turn the fire on from the car on the drive up the mountain, so the room’s warm before you walk in the door. Zero Clearance rating means you can surround the fire in timber and mount a TV 200mm above the glass — the details you notice living with the fire, not the ones on a spec sheet.
Escea Gas — Frequently Asked
Two things stand out. First, the flue — Escea’s Powered Direct Vent uses a fan rather than natural draw, so the flue can run up, sideways, down, or under the floor. That’s why Escea fires can be built into kitchen islands, under windows, in freestanding walls or as double-sided room dividers, where most gas fires simply can’t go. Second, the design language — truly frameless glass, Zero Clearance rating for timber surrounds, and TV clearance as tight as 200mm above the glass. Escea builds fires that disappear into the architecture rather than sit awkwardly on top of it.
Every Escea fire is designed and manufactured in Dunedin, on New Zealand’s South Island. Escea started there in 2002 and has grown into Australasia’s leading fireplace manufacturer, operating from a purpose-built factory with over 160 staff. That matters for two reasons — the fires are engineered specifically for Australasian conditions, Australian gas standards, and Australian building codes, and parts and factory-backed support are close by rather than shipped from Europe or North America.
More than most people expect. Gold Coast winter nights regularly sit between 8°C and 14°C from June through August, and the design language of a modern coastal home — high ceilings, polished concrete floors, floor-to-ceiling glass, open-plan living — loses heat fast the moment the sun drops. An Escea gas fire heats instantly with the flick of a switch — no waiting, no reverse-cycle hum, no dry ducted air. It also earns its space visually year-round, becoming the focal point of the room whether it’s running or not, which a reverse-cycle head unit never will.
Comfortably. Tamborine Mountain, Springbrook, Beechmont, Currumbin Valley and the Scenic Rim all see genuine cold snaps with overnight temperatures approaching zero, and homes at altitude have longer heating seasons than the coast. The DS Series and DF Series push out up to 8kW+ of heat — enough to warm a full open-plan hinterland living area through the coldest nights of the year. Smart Heat maintains a set room temperature automatically, ramping the fire up and down rather than blasting on full, which matters over the longer heating seasons hinterland homes actually have.
Often, yes — and this is where Escea outperforms most gas fireplace brands. The Powered Direct Vent system can flue horizontally or vertically, giving far more install options than natural-draw fireplaces which need a straight vertical flue path. Body corporate approval for a new flue penetration is the usual gate — some Gold Coast high-rises have existing gas fireplace infrastructure, others require an approval. Our team walks through the specific building requirements during a consultation before any commitment is made.
Four distinct briefs. The DS Series is the frameless, edge-to-edge glass flagship — single or double-sided, made for architectural new builds. The DF Series is the renovator’s fire, engineered to retrofit into an existing brick chimney or replace a wood burner. The NB Series is the single-sided all-front-heat option — no complex ducting, simpler installs, still Escea’s signature look. The NX Series is the double-sided version of the NB, ideal for connecting two rooms without a full DS-scale build.
Single-sided suits most rooms — the fire sits against a wall as a visual anchor to the main living space. Double-sided fires are for when there’s a wall between two rooms you want to visually connect, or when you want the fireplace to float as a room divider in an open-plan space. Double-sided models are also stunning behind a kitchen island or between a living and dining zone. If in doubt, walk through the space with one of our team and we’ll tell you honestly which will land better.
Depends on the model, but the range spans traditional to fully contemporary. Options include Splitwood and Driftwood (realistic freshly-cut log looks), Traditional Logs, NZ River Rock (Escea’s signature — actual river stones from Egmont National Park sampled by the founders), Volcanic Rock in natural or black, Woodland Selection, and crushed glass for a fully modern look. The fuelbed is what sets the mood — you can spec the same fire and get four completely different aesthetics.
Yes. Escea Smart Heat connects the fire to your home network and gives you full control from a smartphone app — ignition, temperature setting, fan speed and timers. On a cold drive up to Tamborine or home from Coolangatta, you can have the fire on and the room warm before you walk in the door. Smart Heat is standard across the DS, DF and DL Series and integrates with most home management systems.
Reticulated natural gas is available across most of the Gold Coast urban footprint — from Southport through Broadbeach and Mermaid to Palm Beach. Hinterland and acreage properties — Tamborine, Springbrook, Currumbin Valley, parts of the Scenic Rim — typically run on bottled LPG. Every Escea gas fire can be specified for either, but the choice needs to be made at order stage. LPG running costs are higher than natural gas but still significantly lower than electric heating.
Escea gas fires carry a 5-year warranty on the firebox and a 2-year total warranty on components — one of the stronger warranty offerings in the premium gas fireplace market.
