Mt Tamborine, the Sunshine Coast hinterland and the Northern Rivers hills can drop to single digits in July. And even in the suburbs, that coastal southerly in the middle of winter cuts through. But beyond the heating argument — a fireplace sets a mood that no ducted air conditioning can replicate. It’s the focal point that changes the character of a room. Queensland’s climate means fireplaces are used seasonally — typically June through August in South East Queensland. Gas fireplaces are the most popular choice for Brisbane and Gold Coast homes because they deliver instant heat at the flick of a switch with no wood sourcing or ash cleanup. Wood fireplaces remain the most popular choice in hinterland and rural areas where firewood is accessible and the ambience of a real wood fire is part of the lifestyle. Electric fireplaces suit apartments, rental properties and rooms where flue installation isn’t possible. Bioethanol and pellet fireplaces suit those wanting a real flame without a flue.
Yes — and we strongly recommend it. A fireplace is a significant investment and seeing one running in person is completely different to a photo or a video. Yes — most gas fireplaces require a flue or vent to exhaust combustion gases outside. The two main types are natural flue (vertical flue through the ceiling and roof) and direct vent (horizontal flue through an external wall). Direct vent systems are popular in Queensland renovations where cutting through the roof is not practical. Flueless gas fires are available but are subject to strict Australian standards on room size and ventilation. Yes. Most modern fireplaces are designed for new builds and renovations without existing chimneys. Gas fireplaces use direct vent flue systems through an external wall. Electric fireplaces require no flue at all. Bioethanol fireplaces are completely flueless. Wood fireplaces require a flue system installed through the ceiling and roof — this is straightforward in new builds and manageable in renovations with the right planning. An inbuilt fireplace is built into the wall — it sits flush with the wall surface and is typically framed with stone, tile or render to create a feature wall. It has a clean, architectural look and is popular in new builds and major renovations. A freestanding fireplace sits in front of the wall and can be positioned anywhere in a room with access to a flue. Freestanding fireplaces are easier to install in existing homes and often suit heritage or country-style properties. Both are available in gas, wood, electric and bioethanol formats.
Fireplace costs vary significantly by type and installation complexity. As a general guide: electric fireplaces start from around $1,500 supply only with minimal installation cost; gas fireplaces typically range from $3,000 to $15,000+ supply and install depending on the model and flue system; wood fireplaces range from $2,500 to $20,000+ supply and install. Yes — stone cladding is one of the most popular finishes for fireplace surrounds and feature walls. Natural stone is completely heat safe and will not discolour or degrade from radiant heat. At HAUS Collective we stock both fireplaces and natural stone wall cladding — you can choose your fireplace and your stone surround in the same visit at our Hamilton showroom.
We supply fireplaces and can recommend licensed installers across Brisbane, Gold Coast, Sunshine Coast and the Northern Rivers. Gas fireplace installation must be carried out by a licensed gas fitter. Wood fireplace installation should be carried out by a qualified installer familiar with Australian flue standards. We work with trusted installers across South East Queensland and can coordinate the full supply and install process for your project.
A pellet fireplace burns compressed wood pellets — a clean, renewable fuel source made from sawdust and wood waste. The pellets are loaded into a hopper and fed automatically into the firebox by an auger, giving you consistent, controllable heat output. Pellet fireplaces are significantly more efficient than traditional wood fires and produce very low emissions. They require a flue but the flue diameter is smaller than a wood fireplace. Pellet fireplaces are popular in Europe and are growing in popularity across Australia for their efficiency and ease of use.
