Yes — all outdoor natural stone should be sealed with a penetrating impregnator sealer before use. Sealing protects the stone from moisture penetration, staining from garden soil and organic matter, and UV degradation. For driveways and high-traffic areas, use a sealer with good oil and stain resistance as well as water resistance. Plan to reseal every few years depending on exposure and traffic. Weed growth between cobblestones is controlled by the jointing material used during installation. Polymeric sand — a sand and polymer blend that sets hard when wet — is the most effective jointing product for cobblestone areas. It resists weed germination and ant nesting significantly better than plain sand or mortar. Some cobblestone areas use a mortar joint instead. Whatever jointing method is used, correct installation with a compacted base and consistent joint width makes a significant difference to long-term weed control.
