For coastal properties within 2km of salt air, basalt and granite are denser choices that resist salt penetration better than softer stones. Pool coping is the stone or tile that caps the edge of the pool shell — the top edge that people sit on, step onto and that defines the visual boundary between the pool and the surrounding paving. It serves both a functional purpose (protecting the pool shell edge and providing a grip surface) and a design purpose (setting the tone for the entire pool environment). The coping profile — bullnose, dropface, square edge, or drop-down — affects both the look and the practicality of the pool edge. Yes — sealing is essential for all natural stone in a pool environment. Pool water, pool chemicals and constant wetting and drying cycles will stain and degrade unsealed stone over time. Use a penetrating impregnator sealer — not a surface coating — that soaks into the stone and protects from within. For pool surrounds, plan to reseal every 2–3 years depending on pool use and stone type. We stock sealers specifically formulated for outdoor and wet-zone natural stone applications.

Yes — using the same stone for both coping and surrounds creates a cohesive, unified look that most designers and homeowners prefer. The coping is typically supplied in a different profile (bullnose or dropface) to the surrounding pavers which are flat, but from the same stone and finish. This consistency is one of the things that distinguishes a considered pool design from a generic one. Pool tiles are typically smaller format — 100x100mm to 300x300mm — and are used on the interior waterline of the pool (the band of tiles just below the waterline) and sometimes on pool steps and benches. Pool pavers are larger format — typically 400x400mm to 600x600mm and larger — and are used on the surrounding pool deck and coping.
