Stone cladding installs directly onto cement sheet, brick or blockwork — practical for new builds and renovations without major structural consideration. The colour range moves from deep charcoals and blacks through to warm ochres, creams and linens — stones that sit naturally alongside timber, render, steel and glass. Whatever the material palette, there’s a stone in our range that completes it.
The one thing we always say: seal it properly. A quality penetrating impregnator sealer applied after installation protects the stone from moisture and staining — particularly on exterior walls in Queensland’s climate. We stock sealers suited to every stone type and our team can point you to the right product for your specific application.
Stone Wall Cladding — Installation and Buying Guide
What surface can stone cladding be fixed to?
Stone cladding can be fixed to most solid substrates including concrete, masonry, fibre cement sheet and brick. The surface must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free of dust, grease, paint or any loose material that would affect the adhesive bond. Brick or block externally is the most common substrate in Queensland residential builds. Internally cement sheet and tile underlay are the most common.
What is the difference between natural stone cladding and manufactured stone veneer?
Natural stone cladding is cut directly from quarried stone — every piece is unique, with genuine variation in colour, texture and character that only comes from millions of years of geological formation. Manufactured stone veneer — sometimes called reconstituted stone or artificial stone — is made from concrete, aggregate and pigment moulded to resemble natural stone. It costs less upfront but lacks the depth, variation and longevity of genuine natural stone. At HAUS we stock only natural stone — if you want the real thing, that’s what you’ll find here.
Do I need to waterproof before installing stone cladding?
For exterior walls and any wet areas — bathrooms, pool surrounds, outdoor showers — waterproofing the substrate before installation is essential. A membrane should be applied but ensure you use the same manufactures glue to ensure compatibility. Apply to the substrate before cladding prevents moisture penetration behind the stone.
Do I need corner pieces?
Yes — for any external corner, purpose-made corner pieces are essential. Stone should never appear to be floating or cut at a corner — it looks unfinished and exposes the cut edge of the stone. Corner pieces are available for most styles in our range and are sold per lineal metre.
How do I cut stone cladding?
Use a bench saw with a wet diamond blade for clean, accurate cuts. An angle grinder can be used for small or awkward cuts but gives less control. To create natural looking edges, use an engineer’s hammer to chip the edges — this makes the lay look natural.
IMPORTANT: Always wash the stone immediately after cutting to prevent cutting paste drying on the face of the stone. Follow current silica dust safety guidelines on site — appropriate PPE and dust suppression are required when cutting natural stone.
How soon can I grout after laying?
Leave the stone undisturbed for a minimum of 24 hours after laying before grouting. When grouting, use a grout piping bag to fill joints — never sponge wet grout over the stone face as it will smear into the texture and is extremely difficult to remove. Rake or strike joints to a consistent depth while the grout is still green, then brush off loose grout with a dry brush once cured.
When and how do I seal stone cladding?
Seal after grouting is fully cured — typically 2 to 3 days after installation. Use a penetrating impregnator sealer, not a surface coating. Apply with a fine mist with a low pressure sprayer, allow to penetrate, then wipe off excess before it dries on the surface. For exterior Queensland applications, plan to reseal every 10 to 15 years. Can stone cladding be used on a fireplace surround?
Stone cladding is one of the most popular finishes for fireplace surrounds and feature walls in Australian homes. Natural stone is completely heat safe and will not discolour or degrade from radiant heat.

How do I calculate how much stone cladding I need?
Measure the total wall area in square metres — height multiplied by width. Deduct any openings such as windows and doors. Add 20% to your total for cuts and wastage, and more for walls with lots of corners or complex shapes. Corner pieces are measured and ordered separately in lineal metres. If you’re unsure, send us your wall dimensions and we’ll calculate it for you.
HAUS COLLECTIVE STONE CLADDING STYLES
When searching for natural stone cladding they fall under many search phrases and cut styles. Terms to consider when doing your research are: Natural stone wall cladding, stone cladding, stone walling, stone veneer and stone facades. This can confuse somewhat however generally they are all the same thing. A thin rock face with a sawn back to adhere to the substrate.
The other thing to consider the lay style, whether you install it with a grout line or tight lay it. Grout lines can range from 5mm to 15mm wide, whether they are raked out or washed out to give you a vintage look.
Tight laying is to lay the stone with the appearance of stacked stone with no grout line visible. Both styles have a considerable effect on the overall appearance and should be discussed with you stone mason before laying the stone cladding.

Random Cut as the name suggests is a stone cladding that is supplied in organic random shapes where no side or two pieces are the same. This free from style can be laid using a mortar join or tight laid.
RANDOM ASHLAR
Random Ashlar Pattern is a partially dressed stone cladding, which means individual stone pieces have been cut straight at the top and bottom with random sides, giving a layered effect with no structure.
ASHLAR
Ashlar Pattern is a full dressed stone, which means individual stone pieces have been cut and worked until squared or rectangle, which typically has a smooth stone facade and tight laid having no mortar join.
LEDGE
Ledge Cut is a fully dressed stone, which means individual stone pieces have been cut and worked into elongated rectangle shapes, which has a split facade which is typically tight laid to give a dry stacked appearance having no mortar join.
TRADITIONAL FORMAT
Traditional format is full worked stone cladding that is cut straight all 4 sides. Generally it is cut with random lengths and uniform heights to give the appearance of a random laid brick bond. Typically tight laid.
Z PANEL
Z Panel is an interlocking panelised cladding that includes stone that is Ledge Cut which means individual stone pieces have been cut and worked into elongated rectangle shapes which tight laid to give a dry stacked appearance.
