Log Fireplace Close Up

Choosing a gas fireplace isn’t really about the fire itself — it’s about the room it lives in. Get the fire wrong for the space and it either overheats a small room, underperforms in a big one, or fights the architecture instead of anchoring it.

Our first question is always the same:

What are you trying to do with this room?

Heat a genuine open-plan area through winter?

Create a focal point for a new build?

Retrofit into an existing brick chimney without rebuilding the wall?

Make an outdoor entertaining space usable in July?

The answer to that question narrows the range down fast, and from there it’s a conversation about flame quality, the fireplace media, flue path and finishings.

We stock every serious gas fireplace brand available in Australia because no single brand does everything well.

A minimalist frameless glass fire from Escea, a hyper-realistic flame-through-log fire from Ortal Wilderness or a Brisbane-made Jetmaster are all correct answers to different briefs.

Our job is to ask the right questions, walk you through the working displays at our Hamilton showroom, and let the flame quality make the final call for you.

Gas Fireplaces — Buying Guide

More than most people expect. Brisbane winter nights consistently sit between 5°C and 12°C from May through August, and modern open-plan homes with high ceilings, polished concrete floors and floor-to-ceiling glass lose heat fast. Unlike ducted air conditioning, a gas fireplace delivers instant radiant heat with no wait, no dry ducted air, and no hum. It also earns its space visually — a fireplace becomes the focal point of the room whether it’s running or not, which a reverse-cycle head unit never will.

Yes — high-output models are engineered for exactly that. Toowoomba, Stanthorpe, Warwick, Maleny, Mount Tamborine and the Granite Belt all see genuine cold snaps with overnight temperatures below zero, and homes in those regions typically have longer heating seasons than Brisbane. Larger fireplaces across most premium brands push out 8kW+ of heat, which is enough to warm a full open-plan living area through the coldest nights of the year. Smart thermostatic controls (available on most modern gas fireplaces) also ramp heat up and down automatically rather than blasting on full, which matters over a longer heating season.

Yes — every gas fireplace installation requires its own dedicated flue system, sized and specified for that specific model. Existing flues from a previous fireplace, including old wood fireplace flues, generally cannot be reused. Modern gas fireplaces use balanced flue or powered direct vent systems that are engineered specifically to the appliance. Our team specifies the correct flue as part of every quote.

Running cost depends on the model’s efficiency rating (higher stars = more heat per dollar of gas), your gas tariff, and how long you run the fire each night. Higher efficiency models sit in the 4.5 to 5.9 star range and convert far more of the gas you pay for into usable heat than an old-style open gas fire. As a general guide, running a high efficiency gas fireplace for several hours through a Brisbane winter evening is broadly comparable to running ducted air conditioning over the same period — with a much better flame to look at.

Different tools for different jobs. Gas fireplaces produce real combustion heat suitable as a primary heat source for a room or open-plan area, with a real flame. Electric fireplaces need no flue and no gas connection, so they install almost anywhere, but they produce less heat and the flame is a visual effect rather than genuine combustion. For serious heating in a Queensland winter — especially outside Brisbane — gas outperforms electric. For an apartment, a rental, or a room where flue access simply isn’t possible, electric is the practical answer.

Some of the Brisbane suburbs are on reticulated natural gas, which is the easiest and most cost-effective option. Homes outside the natural gas network — common in the hinterland, Northern Rivers, acreage properties, and parts of the Scenic Rim — run on bottled LPG. Almost every gas fireplace we stock can be specified for either, but the choice needs to be made at order stage, not after installation. LPG running costs are typically higher than natural gas but still significantly lower than electric heating.

Most rooms, yes — but the flue path is the deciding factor. The flue needs to run from the fireplace to an external wall or roof penetration, and different fireplaces have different flue flexibility. Some brands allow horizontal, vertical or even under-floor flue runs, which opens up positions most fireplaces can’t reach — kitchen islands, freestanding walls, under windows. Our team runs a free onsite consultation to work out what’s possible in your specific space before we quote.

A well-specified premium gas fireplace, professionally installed and serviced annually, is a 15 to 20 year piece of the home — not a disposable appliance. Warranties across the premium brands we stock typically cover 5 years on the firebox with shorter cover on electronic components, but the fires themselves easily outlast that with proper care.
