Stone Wall Cladding Northern Rivers
Natural stone cladding adds texture, depth and character to both interior and exterior spaces. The Northern Rivers — Byron Bay, Ballina, Lismore and the surrounding hinterland — has a design culture all its own, built around organic materials, natural texture and a deep connection to the landscape. With over 50 natural stone wall claddings on display at our Hamilton showroom, we can help Northern Rivers homeowners, builders and architects find the right stone for any project.
Which stone suits your Northern Rivers project?
Hinterland & Rustic
Byron’s hinterland — Bangalow, Federal, the hills behind Lismore — has built a design identity around organic, earthy materials that feel like they’ve always belonged to the landscape. Acreage homes, barn conversions and renovated farmhouses call for stone with genuine character.
Random and random ashlar cut stones in warm ochres, browns and mixed naturals deliver exactly that look. Our Bavarian, Colonial, Cradle Mountain, Calais and Capri ranges are the natural fit for hinterland and rural Northern Rivers properties.
Coastal & Beach House
Byron Bay and the coastal strip have their own relaxed, beach house aesthetic — warm timbers, sun-bleached palettes and a material selection that echoes the sand and the light. Travertine and limestone are the stones that define this look.
Their warm creams, honeys and earthy tones suit the renovated beach shacks, new coastal builds and architecturally designed homes that define Byron’s residential landscape. Our Classic Linen, Silver, Mila and Crete ranges are the most specified for this style.
Contemporary & Architectural
The Northern Rivers has attracted significant architectural investment over the past decade — striking, design-led new builds particularly around Byron Bay and the surrounding hinterland villages. These projects call for a more refined material palette.
Clean-cut ledge and ashlar format stones in charcoals, blacks and dark greys make a bold, confident statement on contemporary facades and interior feature walls. Our Blue Steel Random and Ledge, Dakar Random and Ledge and Kamari ranges suit this aesthetic well.
From Our Team to Your Project
The Northern Rivers has one of the strongest grassroots design and building cultures in the country — a region full of architects, builders and owner-builders who care deeply about getting the material palette right. We’ve been supplying stone cladding to projects across Byron Bay, Ballina and Lismore for years, and we understand the region’s particular conditions — coastal salt air on the immediate coast, high rainfall and humidity through the hinterland, and a building culture that values genuine, natural materials over anything that looks manufactured.
What sets HAUS apart isn’t just the range — it’s how we work with you. We love getting involved early, helping create material palettes from inception through to completion. Whether you’re an architect specifying for a high-end new build in Byron, a builder pricing a hinterland renovation, or a homeowner staring at a blank wall wondering where to start — we’re with you for the journey.
Our team has decades of experience across stone, design and construction, and they bring that knowledge to every conversation. We have direct import relationships, with quality control and premium products our main focus.
We’re not formal people. Come in, pull samples off the wall, ask the hard questions. That’s what the showroom is for — and we deliver to the Northern Rivers regularly, so distance from Brisbane is never a barrier to getting the right stone.
Stone cladding installs directly onto cement sheet, brick or blockwork — practical for new builds and renovations without major structural consideration. The colour range moves from deep charcoals and blacks through to warm ochres, creams and linens — stones that sit naturally alongside timber, render, steel and glass.
The one thing we always say: seal it properly. A quality penetrating impregnator sealer applied after installation protects the stone from moisture and staining — particularly important given the Northern Rivers’ high rainfall. We stock sealers suited to every stone type and our team can point you to the right product for your specific application.
Stone Wall Cladding — Installation and Buying Guide
Stone cladding can be fixed to most solid substrates including concrete, masonry, fibre cement sheet and brick. The surface must be structurally sound, clean, dry and free of dust, grease, paint or any loose material that would affect the adhesive bond. Brick or block externally is the most common substrate in coastal and hinterland builds. Internally cement sheet and tile underlay are the most common.
Natural stone cladding is cut directly from quarried stone — every piece is unique, with genuine variation in colour, texture and character that only comes from millions of years of geological formation. Manufactured stone veneer — sometimes called reconstituted stone or artificial stone — is made from concrete, aggregate and pigment moulded to resemble natural stone. It costs less upfront but lacks the depth, variation and longevity of genuine natural stone. At HAUS we stock only natural stone — if you want the real thing, that’s what you’ll find here.
For properties close to the coast around Byron Bay, denser stones such as granite and basalt handle salt air exposure best. Travertine performs exceptionally well too when correctly sealed — it has been used in coastal Mediterranean climates for centuries. For hinterland properties further from the coast, the full range performs well, with high rainfall making correct sealing the more important consideration than salt exposure. Our team can advise on the right product for your specific Northern Rivers location.
Yes — for any external corner, purpose-made corner pieces are essential. Stone should never appear to be floating or cut at a corner — it looks unfinished and exposes the cut edge of the stone. Corner pieces are available for most styles in our range and are sold per lineal metre.
Seal after grouting is fully cured — typically 2 to 3 days after installation. Use a penetrating impregnator sealer, not a surface coating. Apply with a fine mist with a low pressure sprayer, allow to penetrate, then wipe off excess before it dries on the surface. Given the Northern Rivers’ high rainfall, especially through the hinterland, correct sealing and periodic resealing every 5 to 10 years is particularly important for exterior applications. We stock sealers suited to every stone type in our range.
Measure the total wall area in square metres — height multiplied by width. Deduct any openings such as windows and doors. Add 20% to your total for cuts and wastage, and more for walls with lots of corners or complex shapes. Corner pieces are measured and ordered separately in lineal metres. If you’re unsure, send us your wall dimensions and we’ll calculate it for you.
HAUS COLLECTIVE STONE CLADDING STYLES
When searching for natural stone cladding they fall under many search phrases and cut styles. Terms to consider when doing your research are: Natural stone wall cladding, stone cladding, stone walling, stone veneer and stone facades. This can confuse somewhat however generally they are all the same thing. A thin rock face with a sawn back to adhere to the substrate.
The other thing to consider the lay style, whether you install it with a grout line or tight lay it. Grout lines can range from 5mm to 15mm wide, whether they are raked out or washed out to give you a vintage look.
Tight laying is to lay the stone with the appearance of stacked stone with no grout line visible. Both styles have a considerable effect on the overall appearance and should be discussed with your stone mason before laying the stone cladding.
The second thing to consider is the cut style of the stone — below is a guide of the most popular stone veneer cut styles.
